IN TOUCH WITH GOD    by Edward Heppenstall

Power From God APRIL 19

WHO ARE THE SONS OF GOD?—1

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Rom. 8:14.

The importance of being led by the Holy Spirit cannot be overestimated. For the Spirit creates within us the clear conviction that we are indeed the sons and daughters of God. This implies living now as a conscious member of God's family. We are the special concern of our Father's love. The right of inheritance for the children of God is the very law and plan of heaven. It is sure and it is unerring.

Said Christ: "And think not to say within yourselves, We have Abraham to our father: for I say unto you, that God is able of these stones to raise up children unto Abraham" (Matt. 3:9). No one can be a child of God by calling himself one. God looks not at what we call ourselves but what we actually are.

The Scripture states that the Holy Spirit must settle the matter. If we are led by the Spirit, then we are the sons and daughters of God. If we are not so led, then we are not His children. How do we know when we are led by the Holy Spirit?

Which way are we taking, the narrow way or the broad way? If we knowingly continue in sin, then we cannot be led by the Spirit. We can no more be walking toward and with Christ when following any sin than we can be walking east when we are going west.

To be led by God is the divine principle that operates throughout all of God's creation. In the natural world God gives life to every flower, regulates every cell of plants and animals. He orders the grandeur and the beauty of the natural world. Then who should doubt for a moment the leading of the Spirit in our personal lives? Will not the Lord who guides the birds in their migrations, do much more for us? Will He who pilots all the stars in their courses hesitate to pilot our lives?

Place the right book in your hand, with Christian people as your companions. If a book is tainted with evil, let it alone. If a worldly place of amusement caters to the ugly, the cheap, and the impure, keep away. Listen to the still small voice of the Spirit. Wait upon Him sincerely, obediently. Everything depends upon your cooperation with Him.
