IN TOUCH WITH GOD    by Edward Heppenstall

Triumph in Christ DECEMBER 6

THE CHURCH OF THE LIVING GOD

The house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. 1 Tim. 3:15.

In every generation there have been churches whose members have felt that theirs would become the church glorious to usher in the return of Christ. You and I believe that we belong to that kind of truth, the remnant church. On what basis do we have the right to make this claim?

First, the triumphant church must have a triumphant mission. We must contend earnestly for the faith once given to the saints. Conscientious people are not inclined to join a church unless she calls upon them to do for God and man that which is beyond what other religions call upon them to do, and what is beyond what they already have. Therefore we live, we speak, we witness, we commit ourselves.

Second, the triumphant Church is to be "the pillar and ground of the truth." One possible peril is the loss of faith in the Bible as the charter of truth. Men today are ever seeking to modify the Word of God. The overwhelming tendency is to corrupt the truth of God. The true church is to be the pillar of the truth. So are the church members. We are entrusted with the responsibility to hold the truth, to teach the truth, to maintain the truth, to defend it, and to proclaim it

The church is the ground of the truth. Trust rests in a church that is stable, firm, and unshaken as to the Word of God. It is exceedingly important that we believe what we seek to proclaim. We are to keep alive the knowledge of God's truth.

Third, the church triumphant is the house of God. This means that God is present in the church and in us. Here the blessed presence and power of God is felt and experienced. We present a high moral and spiritual life before the world.

Always the danger presents itself that we might become a sleeping church. Sabbath worship becomes a matter of convenience. A sleeping church is unconcerned. She is indifferent to those outside of Christ. An awakened church is never the result of an accident, but of earnest prayer, of settled purpose, and of a supreme desire toward Christ. The Son of man goes forth to war and to victory. The church is to triumph with Him.
