Triumph in Christ | DECEMBER 8 |
A SURE FOUNDATION The foundation of God standeth sure. 2 Tim. 2:19. We do not build a sixty-story skyscraper on a one-story foundation. It takes a sure foundation to support our lives as Christians, to build a character that will endure unto eternity. In planning our lives, the first responsibility is to build on that which is eternally true. Joseph, who faced a moral battle in the house of Potiphar, had built his life on God. Daniel, who met the temptation to compromise his principles in Babylon, stood firm on God. Moses, with the glories of an ancient empire offered to him, had built his life on Christ. So had Paul, when he stood before Nero. So have all loyal Christians. No human structure ever collapsed until the individual moved away from Christ. As a teacher, I have always wanted young people to make sure their lives were founded on Christ and on His Word. I have known many cases where voting men and women developed a strong moral character. They stood firm under the most severe temptations. I have known others who were not that careful. They meant well, but they daily went their own way and relied on themselves. It was never enough. Their intentions seemed good enough, but their moral performance, their endurance and loyalty to that which is true, proved to be very mediocre. Moral and spiritual failure is always a serious problem. What happens when a than has nothing more to depend on than himself? People try by the force of will to overcome some bad habit, a bad temper, a craving for questionable things. There is a continual inner conflict. In the end, the defects in character show up and win out. To build on our own power is quite useless. Said Christ, "Without me ye can do nothing" (John 15:5). Much of religious teaching and preaching takes the form of moralizing—we ought to do this or we ought not to do that. People get tired of religious lectures. We must find meaning to what we believe. Christian faith moves deeper and deeper in certainty as to what Christ is to us, In every life decision we cast our deciding vote on His side. Faith in Christ is the only way to victorious power. |
