IN TOUCH WITH GOD    by Edward Heppenstall

Triumph in Christ DECEMBER 13

AN UNSHAKABLE CHARACTER

I will make a man more precious than fine gold; even a man than the golden wedge of Ophir. Therefore I will shake the heavens, and the earth shall remove out of her place. Isa. 13:12, 13.

We all know people who cannot be shaken out of the Christian faith. We have known others who have been shaken out. In our faith and position as Christians, we like to believe that we have within us the quality of the imperishable, the unshakable. The last days are to be the crucial test in a man's life. Everything that can be shaken will be shaken.

Just what do you think will happen to you then? When do we become unshakable? We cannot live by the position and opinions of risen. Some positions will change. Some will never change. With the first, we must be willing to test everything by the Word of God. The Word of God stands on its own divine origin. That makes it unshakable. Because God always keeps His word, the promises and prophecies of the Bible are true. To establish us in the faith, the Holy Spirit works by and with the Word of God. He produces in our lives an experience that cannot be explained unless the Bible be the Word of God.

When we take Jesus Christ and His Word seriously, we must face the issue of becoming personally involved. What Jesus said, did, and taught, now becomes a personal matter. There is always the temptation to remain distant. The Holy Spirit creates a sense of urgency about salvation, righteousness, arid obedience that makes it undesirable that we keep hesitating, waiting, and arguing for a more convenient time, and until we have solved every difficulty and every question is answered.

If we keep on raising questions and doubts we will escape the necessity to become personally involved. Be sure that your discussion of truth is not a cover-up for the lack of spiritual reality, a refusal to face the truth about yourself. The knowledge of truth does not become saving truth until it leads us to personal commitment. Without that commitment deterioration sets in until we rest satisfied with discussing without commitment. We are to let the Spirit search our lives; we are to seek to do God's will, and obey it the moment the Spirit convicts us.
