Triumph in Christ | DECEMBER 17 |
DESTINATION: THE KINGDOM OF GOD But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness; and all these things shall be added unto you. Matt. 6:33. In 1934 I was a student at a university. In those days money was not very plentiful. I earned my way waiting table in a fraternity. Most of the fellows were the sons of rich men. The most serious student there was a Communist. One day he took me along to a meeting. It was exciting, not because of what was said, but because of the spirit. The hall was small, the place crowded. This particular young man was one of the leaders. He had a real sense of mission. On the way back to the fraternity I asked him, "What about your future? What do you intend to do?" He replied, "I have security, not because I am rich, but because I know where I am going. I belong to a movement that will ultimately conquer the world." I said to him, "You are mistaken. Communism has no future. I am a Christian. I too know where I am going. I also know what is coming. This world is not to be a Communist kingdom, but the kingdom of God. I have a future that reaches into eternity." He was in pursuit of an earthly kingdom for his own interests. The supreme thing was the glory of man. For me it was God, His kingdom, and the rule of His righteousness. His philosophy was self-centered. Mine was Christ-centered. We have come to the hour when we are lodged, as it were, between two worlds: the world we know and live in, and the new earth yet to he born. The first is visible. Potentially it is dead. It has no future. There is no solution to the world's fatal sickness within the present historical process. The world we belong to is invisible. We call for a devotion greater than that of any other philosophy or earthly system. Christ alone has the power to subdue all things unto Himself. There never was a more fateful experiment than when God created our world, which He knew would rebel against Him. He knew that His holy love must triumph before the universe. We live with an awareness of how much is at stake in this matter. All members of the Godhead staked everything on the person and work of Jesus Christ on earth, and won. |
