IN TOUCH WITH GOD    by Edward Heppenstall

Christian Obedience JULY 30

THE RENEWED MIND

Be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Rom. 12:2.

It is not possible to overemphasize what we do with our minds. These words of Paul stand unrivaled as defining the Christian life. An essential aspect of it is the renewed mind, the remade mind. What is more serious than having a mind that is impaired and darkened by sin? What is more significant than to have the mind restored by the Holy Spirit?

Every truth from God is an expression of the divine mind. He has given us these truths that we may know Him, know His character, so that our own minds may be brought into harmony with His. If we reject any truth that He reveals, we fall short of our knowledge of Him. We are to exercise to the utmost the use of our minds toward God. It is not enough to be content with little, to be satisfied with the crumbs that fall from the table.

Our mind is like a garden; it will grow up in weeds or in beautiful flowers. It is like a savings bank. We cannot take out what we have not put in. A renewed mind never occurs in a vacuum. The mind of truth rejects error. The mind darkened by sin rejects truth. Our response to God is not blind obedience. Our minds are open when we can say, "This is the truth from God. This is God's Word to me. God has truly spoken to my heart."

We become renewed persons, not by flights of feeling but by diligent application of the mind to truth and commitment to obey it. This becomes utterly crucial to our own Christian stability and maturity.

Let us not hesitate to accept and obey all the truth of God. There can be no standard of beauty, no standard of desire, but that which comes forth from the mind of God.

The mole grubbing in the dirt cannot discern the world of glory that is disclosed to the eye of the eagle. For us the highest revelation from God is found in Jesus Christ and in His Word. The secret of righteousness, of transformation, of restoration, is found here. Nothing so determines the quality of our lives as what we do with our minds. We are to have the mind of Christ, the key to everything.
