THE PATH TO GREATNESS Happy art thou, O Israel: who is like unto thee, O people saved by the Lord. Deut. 33:29. Christian living is greater than wealth, grander than worldly fame, more rewarding than any career in the world. Christ does not demand that you be a doctor, a lawyer, farmer, engineer, scientist, or a business tycoon. No doubt the world will applaud you should you succeed in any of these occupations. But without Christ they cut but a small figure before the universe. High position or a large salary is no indication of success with God. You have not chosen the path to greatness until all your faculties are awakened by the Spirit of God, and your whole being is committed to the life and the work to which Christ has appointed you. A man cheapens himself by leaving out Christ. Sports, music, social climbing, the ability to make money, can only end in failure unless Christ is given first place. If you are committed to Him, then all of life's abilities, activities, and purposes will find expression in loving obedience to God and loving service for others. A living beauty in your life and a creativity in your heart and mind will be seen because you have added the presence and the glory of the Lord. As the sun unfolds the beauty and the fragrance of the flowers, so Christ unfolds our lives in love, joy, peace, kindness, integrity, and righteousness. A young woman graduating from college was asked, "What do you want most in life?" She replied with one word: "Fame " The greatest exploits in the history of our world are found in the service of God. If you are asking for lasting fame and greatness, then the Christian faith can give you the sure formula. The fundamental principle for greatness, fame, honor, and happiness is this: These things are best found in bringing Christ's life to someone else. You may not like to give up many things that the world has to offer. I am not suggesting that you should. But you ought to think and live in terms of God's handiwork in the lives of the great men and women of the Bible and of the Christian church. By all means, find out to what extent God can do the same for you. |
