Love in Our Hearts | MAY 18 |
LIFE IN DEPTH The spirit of the Lord God is upon me because the Lord has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the humble, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to captives. Isa. 61:1, N.E.B. One of our needs is the deepening of our moral and spiritual lives. Sensuous, pleasure-loving attitudes have weakened the character. We need young people with great moral and spiritual compulsions driving them to witness for Christ. A great spiritual hunger exists among millions of young people today. To a large degree, some youth are more honest about life than some adults. Christian young people are to stand for things that are big enough, clean enough, noble enough, and true enough. The kingdom of God is soon to be established. We must give ourselves wholly to it. We must refuse to play games to amuse ourselves. We are to unite ourselves to divine resources by means of a deepening prayer and study life. All too often the temptation is to take our life-style from the prevailing life around us. Christ calls us to abandon petty aims and shallow living, to lose ourselves in the glorious Christian adventure in preparation for our coming King. The strength of Christ is ours. Divine resources are available. The call is not to compete with the world's great minds and men. Much as we admire them, this achievement is not enough. How lofty the intellects that have searched out the great discoveries in science, in medicine, and in every field of endeavor. Even without their admitting their dependence on God for what truth they do find, how impressive are some parts of the philosophies of a Plato, an Aristotle, a Seneca! How sublime are the literary geniuses of a Homer, a Dante, a Shakespeare, a Keats, and a Shelley! How superb are the artistic talents of a Michelangelo, a Raphael, a Christopher Wren! How frequently the brightest minds have the saddest lives. How might such talent have blessed the world if it had been fully dedicated to Christ! Have you found Christ worth living for? Think what you will about Jesus Christ, no man on earth has ever so inspired men to such great sacrifice and dedication. to such transformed lives. Is He doing that for you? |
