IN TOUCH WITH GOD    by Edward Heppenstall

"A LIGHT ON MY PATH"

Thy word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light on my path. Ps. 119:105, N.E.B.

The Word of God is the word that comes from God. God speaks, and His word is true. God speaks, and the event prophesied takes place. God's Word is an intelligent communication to us. It contains that which He wishes us to understand concerning Himself and His will. When God speaks we can count on that word. One of God's best gifts to us is His word of truth.

We must not shift our belief in the word of God to the uncertain voices of human councils and critics. To put man's word before God's word is one of the oldest and most effective of Satan's snares. Once people lose confidence in God's Word they soon disobey it. Deny or disbelieve that the Scripture is God's word, and evil will triumph in the end. Was not this the great temptation trade to Adam and Eve—"Hath God said?"

Often the temptation to doubt and question the Word of God comes to us through the lips of clever men, able men, attractive men, men to be admired, respectable men. We are tempted to dip our colors. When men do this they may call themselves a church, but it is not the church of God.

People everywhere are in search of the truth. Many grope in darkness. Martin Luther was long tormented by a desperate search for the forgiveness of his sins. When he discovered the Word of God and studied it he saw God's light streaming from the cross of Christ. He believed it. He became a new man.

The psalmist declared, "O send out thy light and thy truth, let them lead me; let them bring me unto thy holy hill" (Ps. 43:3). Is this not also the cry of all our hearts and minds? Here is truth. Here is certainty. Here is the Way, the Truth, and the Life. The Word of God will lead you to Christ, keep you in Christ.

You may hesitate to accept the free and easy words of men. You may be skeptical about the promises of men in high office. But in His Word God speaks to you in hundreds of promises, offering you the truth, the everlasting love of God, the privilege of being led by the Spirit. Christ has sealed and guaranteed every pledge with the power of His own resurrection.
