ORIGINS OF THE E. G. WHITE BOOKS
Ellen G White's first writings were published in the form of (1) two letters in the Day-Star, 1846; (2) three broadsides (single sheets printed on one side), 1846, 1847, 1849; (3) articles in James White's pamphlet A Word to the "Little Flock," 1847; and (4) articles in the Present Truth, 1849-50.
Claiming to be the recipient of divine revelation through visions and dreams, Ellen White made known her views to the early Adventist believers in written as well as oral form. One of her earliest works was entitled, A Sketch of the Christian Experience and Views of Ellen G. White (1851), which embodied a brief autobiographical sketch as well as some of her initial writings which had appeared earlier. In 1854 there appeared a Supplement to the Experience and Views of Ellen G. White which presents an explanation of some misunderstood phrases in Experience and Views, together with certain further counsels.
From this small beginning, Ellen White blossomed into a prolific writer. Her Spiritual Gifts (4 vols.) appearing from 1858 to 1864, became the seed-bed for her Spirit of Prophecy (also 4 vols.), 1870n1884, and subsequently for her comprehensive Conflict of the Ages series (5 vols.), 1888-1917.
In the early days of her writing career, Ellen White concentrated on pamphlets and letters, the latter written in the form of 'testimonies' to individuals and churches. These writings were also destined to form the basis of a number of published books which appeared later.
Another important origin of the works of Ellen White is found in her periodical articles which appeared in the Review and Herald, in the Youth's Instructor and later in the Signs of the Times. Some of these articles were also used subsequently in the formation of larger books. Altogether some 4,600 articles from her pen appeared in the journals of the church during her life-time.
With very little formal education, Ellen White did not find writing to be always easy. Often her husband, James White, would assist her by checking her grammar and spelling and general lay-out of material. With the passage of time and with growing experience Ellen White's writing style improved. Aside from her husband, Ellen White soon found it necessary to employ literary assistants who spent time in checking her work, in making necessary corrections, in organizing material and in gathering thoughts from her many articles and pamphlets for the formation of new books.
It has now been verified that through the years Ellen White built up a considerable library which she put to good use. Many times she would find facts and expressions in these historical and theological works which aptly pictured what she believed the Lord would have her present and she would incorporate these sentiments into her writings.
